Mass spectrometers are indispensable analytical toolsHow do the structure and performance of mass analyzers in mass spectrometers manufactured by instrument manufacturers affect ion separationг┐(图1)in modern analytical chemistry and life science fields. They achieve qualitative and quantitative analysis of substances by measuring the ionization state of each component in the sample. The core part of the mass spectrometer is the mass analyzer, whose structure and performance are crucial for the separation of ions. The mass analyzers of mass spectrometers are mainly divided into four types: quadrupole mass analyzer, ion trap mass analyzer, time-of-flight mass analyzer (TOF), and orbitrap mass analyzer. Next, we will focus on the role and influence of quadrupole mass analyzers and time-of-flight mass analyzers in ion separation.

Quadrupole mass analyzer

Quadrupole mass analyzer is one of the most basic and widely used types of mass spectrometers. Its working principle is to apply a periodic oscillating force to ions by an electromagnetic field, so that ions with a specific mass-to-charge ratio (m/z) can pass through the center channel of the quadrupole, while other ions are blocked. The main performance parameters of the quadrupole mass analyzer include the width of the quadrupole, the intensity of the deflection electric field, etc., which directly affect the separation efficiency and resolution of ions.

Influencing factors of ion separation:

Quadrupole width: The wider the width, the wider the range of ions that can pass through, the lower the resolution, but it can handle more types of samples.

Deflection electric field intensity: The stronger the deflection electric field intensity, the stronger the deflection ability to ions, the higher the resolution, but it may lead to an increase in ion loss.

Time-of-flight mass analyzer (TOF)

Time-of-flight mass analyzer is an instrument for mass analysis based on the difference in ion flight time. After ions are accelerated under the action of an electric field, they enter a vacuum cavity during which they will gain a certain flight time. Ions with different mass-to-charge ratios, due to their different masses, have different flight times. By measuring the flight time of ions, their mass-to-charge ratio can be determined. The characteristics of the time-of-flight mass analyzer are high resolution and sensitivity, suitable for the analysis of complex samples.

Vacuum degree: The vacuum degree directly affects the flight speed and stability of ions, thereby affecting the resolution and sensitivity.

Electric field intensity and shape: The shape and intensity of the electric field have an important impact on the acceleration effect of ions, which in turn affects the flight time of ions.

In summary, both quadrupole mass analyzers and time-of-flight mass analyzers, their structures and performance will affect the separation of ions. Optimizing these parameters can improve the analytical performance of mass spectrometers, thus better meeting the needs of scientific researchHow do the structure and performance of mass analyzers in mass spectrometers manufactured by instrument manufacturers affect ion separationг┐(图3) and industrial applications.
